“VS”

It was hard for the European Union leaders to come up with a budget that will help facing Covid 19 challenges. To secure its access to these funds, state members must respect and protect the democratic values on which the EU was built upon. Governments must guarantee they will respect the independence of the judicial system, they will stand for an independent press and will promote state institutions neutrality.

The problem lays with a couple of the EU members which do not want to see established a link between state access to these funds and the respect for democratic institutions. It’s coherent with what has been a recurring policy of Hungary and Poland.  Both governments have been undermining the impartiality of their courts, as well as suffocating media freedom to implement an idea of a 21st century nationalist state.

At this date, it’s pretty much of Us vs Them, using a public health emergency and making hostages out of a community of countries, to secure a vision that goes against the values each country signed up for, when joining the EU.
